Letter
Taking a moment to pause
I pick the letter up and start reading aloud
It describes a young man
Who tried hard to understand
But left here never finding his way
He looked for purpose and meaning
Searching for the things
That could give him completion
But never did he locate the confluence
Of words and thought, feelings and action

And in my younger days
I used to dream about ruling it all
But as I began to age
I soon saw that my kingdom was small
Now broken and out of place
I found a way to bring peace in my life
And in my saddest days
I would think about it

Reading further the letter tells a tale
Of confessions looking for a sin
And a sinner looking to claim them
For he had tried to find his place in this land
But his crime was being different
In confusion he swam
The last few weeks were spent wandering the streets
Looking to the shadows
For the strength that he'd need
And then one night he crossed over the line
To leave the pain of this life behind

(Chorus)

What would you give to try it all again
I'd give it all
What would you say to those you've so let down
I'd say please forgive me
Where will you go to find some solace in this world
There's only one place
What will you do
Now every last prayer you held to is through

Well in my saddest days
On my clearest days I see the only way
Putting the letter down
I thank God for strength I've found
And prepare to leave behind
The pain of this life

The pain of this life
