Identify
(I don't write many love songs,
so when I do, I try to tell a different take on
the usual story. This song is about two people
who just sort of miss each other. Maybe not high
concept, but for me, interesting grounds for
exploring a dialogue between the pair and how
each experiences the "what might have been" of
their interaction.)

I didn't think you'd stay
So I'm glad to see you now at the break of day
Last night it seemed like just a fling
But maybe there's more to you and me than
A passing thing

First there was a meeting of the eyes
A casual hello and then a quick goodbye
Then one day we breathed each other's air
You lingered on my skin
I caught the smell of your hair

And we don't need to justify
Or answer questions about who and why, we just feel
The one thing that I know is what I think about you
And that's the only thing that is real

Because I'm finding my way back home
To the place where I know right from wrong
Crossin' the endless divide
Tryin' to identify the love of my life

Yes it is a mutual thing
When I see your face it makes my heart sing
But I get confused with sorting out
The pull that you exert from the other ones about

And I feel I need to justify
And answer questions about who and why
I feel pressured
But I just want to take my time
Not stumble into something blind
Cause I deserve the one who is right

(Chorus)

You got to identify
The one who makes you feel alive
You got to identify
The person you need to get by

I was hoping you'd stay
But I understand if now you have to go away
And maybe I'm not the one for you
But forever I'll treasure this time
As that's all that I can do

Cause each of us must realize
Who is right for our lives we must choose
So sometimes when the timing's off
With one in love but the other's lost
There is sadness, but that's the daily news

When you are finding your way back home
To the place where you know right from wrong
Crossin' the endless divide
Tryin' to identify the love of your life
