How My Old Man Won The War
My whole childhood unreeled like a film that plays
Clouded and lined by it's age
Frame by frame would roll by but what the pictures showed
The meaning I could never seem to grasp ahold
Well time would prove wise and reveal to me
the truth that underlied all the questions I surmised
It was in a book that made sense of each scene
Beckoning to read it loudly

For this story's never been told before
About how my old man won the war
He battled the demons in his mind like rage and greed and pride
But he always knew what the fighting was for
Not money nor acceptance but so much more
For the wisdom he could give to a child
Who could only pay him back with a smile

I flip through the pages and slowly notice what must have been
How it all looks new to me now
From the clothes that we wore to food from the store so many things
I took for granted that we'd have enough
And each missive bears witness to the toll he bore
From years worked so hard to keep a roof above us all
Giving us the life that none gave to him
I had found the legacy of the love he left within

Now I see it's all because of this man
Who I'm only just begining to understand
And I owe it all to those days
Though I fought his message he still taught me love
Finally the time is right to say

This story's never been told before
About how my old man won the war
He battled the demons in his mind like rage and greed and pride
But he always knew what the fighting was for
Not money nor acceptance but so much more
For the wisdom he could give to a child
Who could only pay him back with a smile
