Greatest Thing
(This song was written for a
friend of mine who often told me about her
late father, for whom she had a great love and
many wonderful memories. This man, from what
I learned, seemed to be the spirit of the family,
with a warm heart and good sense of humor. I
often come back to themes of loss and longing,
and wrote this song to address the passing of
one's parents. Specifically, a dialogue between
a father and daughter in which they try to
communicate everything to each other that they
should in the short time they have left.)

In this life savor every moment
You never know how things are gonna come and go
I found that out when I learned I'd have to leave you
For fate had taken years I'd thought to own
So in the time that remains
I want to make sure you're aware
Of how much that I care

And it's the greatest thing I've known
Having watched you grow up next to me
The greatest thing I've known
Being part of this family

Father dear I can't bear to lose you
Where are we suppose to turn
From the time we were young
I could hear your voice fill every room
Sharing love and laughter's words
Now the family must learn to be strong
Cause in the times of despair
You were always right there

And it's the greatest thing I've known
Having grown up with you next to me
The greatest thing I've known
Feeling you give me the strength to dream
And though each light must fade
There is something time can't take away
That the greatest thing I've known
Is being part of this family

Now I'm sorry to leave but I want you to believe
That in the adults you've become
I couldn't ask for any more of a blessing
That God could give me

Cause it's the greatest thing I've known
Having watched you grow up next to me
The greatest thing I've known
Feeling I give you the strength to dream
And though each light must fade
There is something time can't take away
That the greatest thing I've known
Is being part of this family
