Saturday, July 10th - Transformation at the Base: An evening of Spoken Word and Music to Benefit the Thai Welders Case @ Espresso Mi Cultura Café 8 to Midnight Hollywood, CA Since January 2003, Thai CDC has been providing services and legal advocacy for nineteen Thai welders trafficked into the United States. Lured by false promises, these workers paid exorbitant sums to recruiters/traffickers who ultimately forced them to work with virtually no pay at restaurants in Southern California. They were crammed into a house provided by the trafficker, who also confiscated their passports and greatly restricted their mobility. Without knowing a soul in Los Angeles and without knowledge of English, the workers had no way to escape their situation. However, one of the workers escaped after a year of this and found Thai CDC. Subsequently, Thai CDC helped in the liberation of the other workers. Though liberated, the workers still face the threat of deportation and the large debt that they borrowed in Thailand to pay their recruiters. Thus Thai CDC is working arduously to fight for the workers' redress and legal immigration status. As funding is much needed to assist the workers, Thai CDC is putting on this benefit spoken-word/music night. All proceeds earned from the benefit will go towards the Thai Welders' Case.
